Abstract

In the early XXth century, there was a consolidation of disciplinary separations initiated during the pre-vious centuries. These changes impacted the educational systems and encouraged the development of contemporary professional associations. At the beginning of the XXIst century, we have found that these professional and disciplinary divisions have turned into barriers that limit the ability to adequately address the problems that professions were initially called to resolve. This paper discusses these bar-riers, and explores the possibility of using existing communication digital technologies in order to de-velop transdisciplinary scenarios where problems caused by those barriers can be overcome. Howev-er, and using the case of the practice of building design as an example, we will argue that the use of communication technologies will only suffice if the conflicting system of values generated through the disciplinary divisions are addressed by reviewing the way in which professionals learn, and also by reviewing the regulations to the practice as it has been established by the professional associations.
