Abstract

The objective of this research is to identify the existence of a geography of abstention in presidential and parliamentary elections between 1994 and 2009. The methodology used was the Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) aimed at demonstrating the hypothesis that the voter turnout is not randomly distributed in the local geographical area. Rather it tends to the concentration of high and low spatial clusters forming. To assert geospatial analysis techniques were applied (autocorrelation) and the Moran Global Index and the Index of Local Spatial Association. This study emphasizes the explanatory power that has the geographical area of electoral events.
