Resumen

Este artículo presenta una etnografía sobre amas de casa de mediana edad en un pueblo y una ciudad de España, denominados respectivamente Santorillo y Albaluéda, ambos situados en una comarca andaluza de interior. A partir de un estudio comparativo, se analiza el lugar que ocupa la cocina en sus trayectorias vitales y en sus experiencias como mujeres, amas de casa, parejas, madres y habitantes de sus contextos locales. El estudio explora las similitudes y diferencias con respecto a: su relación con el rol socialmente adscrito de cocinera familiar, el papel de las asociaciones de mujeres y la función de las prácticas culinarias domésticas en la construcción de los vínculos familiares y conyugales, así como los afectos y conflictos asociados a dichas prácticas. Las informantes pertenecen a una generación escasamente abordada por el feminismo difundido en los mass media. Este trabajo aspira a reducir dicho vacío analítico al mostrar que la cocina emerge como un espacio de conflicto —al albergar tensiones conyugales gestionadas mediante tácticas de renegociación del trabajo doméstico— y, simultáneamente, de cohesión e intimidad; además de constituir el lugar desde el cual estas mujeres redefinen su identidad hacia nuevos proyectos del yo y una mayor ocupación del espacio público.

Abstract

This article presents an ethnography of middle-aged housewives in a village and a city in Spain, referred to here as Santorillo and Albaluéda, both located in an inland Andalusian comarca. Through a comparative study, it examines the role of the kitchen in their life trajectories and in their experiences as women, housewives, partners, mothers, and members of their local communities. The study investigates similarities and differences between the two municipalities regarding: how these women relate to the socially ascribed role of family cook, the role played by women’s associations in this respect, the role of domestic kitchen practices in the construction of family and conjugal bonds, and the emotions and conflicts linked to culinary practices. The informants belong to a generation that is scarcely addressed by the forms of feminism disseminated through mass media. This work seeks to address that analytical gap by demonstrating that the kitchen emerges simultaneously as a site of conflict—where conjugal tensions are managed through tactics of renegotiating domestic labor—and as a space of cohesion and intimacy; moreover, it constitutes the locus from which these women redefine their identities toward new projects of the self and a greater engagement with public space.
