Espacialidades, is a biannual electronic publication of the Department of Social Sciences at UAM-C. Its aim is to serve as a forum for academic discussion addressing the complex, contradictory, and multifaceted relationship between space and social life in the contemporary world and across different historical periods.
Espacialidades is part of the international academic debate on the spatial turn in the social sciences and invites the analysis of diverse social practices from a multidisciplinary perspective that emphasizes different territorial scales.
Our magazine is published twice a year. Two issues are published each year: one during the first half of the year (January–June) and another during the second half of the year (July–December).
The texts, digital graphic works, and research updates published incorporate methods and issues addressed from the perspectives of sociology, political science, economics, urban studies, geography, cultural studies, anthropology, and literature.
From its founding until 2024, Espacialidades had two sections: Scientific Articles and Reviews. In its new era, it is pleased to add two new sections: Visual Essay and Research Updates and Methodological Notes.
The Articles section publishes original, unpublished manuscripts of theoretical, empirical, and applied research on topics as diverse as spatial justice and democracy; globalization, multiculturalism, and identities; gender, the construction of forms of representation and participation; socio-territorial conflicts, governance, the environment, population mobility, regional development, and urban space. The book review section publishes critical analyses of books on the spatial dimensions of social, political, economic, and cultural processes. For its part, the visual essay section seeks to promote the creation of graphic and digital works that explore issues of territoriality from aesthetic, critical, and innovative perspectives. Finally, the section on research updates and methodological notes is designed to disseminate preliminary findings, methodological reflections, and stages of broader research projects that represent significant contributions to the study of spatialities and territories.
Espacialidades is a scientific journal of the Department of Social Sciences, part of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Cuajimalpa Campus. Manuscripts are accepted in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
All submissions will undergo a rigorous double-blind peer review process, in accordance with the journal’s editorial guidelines.
The author guidelines for each type of contribution can be found at the bottom of this page. We also recommend reviewing our policies on the use of artificial intelligence and our code of ethics before submitting a manuscript.
Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools in the Preparation of Manuscripts
1. General Principles
Spatialities recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools can support the drafting, editing, and organization of academic texts. However, their use must be transparent, limited, and always subject to the supervision and responsibility of the author(s). The use of AI does not replace intellectual authorship and cannot be considered co-authorship under any circumstances. Consequently, the journal will not accept manuscripts whose central ideas, arguments, or conclusions rely substantially on content generated by artificial intelligence technologies.
2. Acceptable Use Criteria
The use of AI is considered acceptable only for the following tasks:
– Linguistic review (grammar, syntax, punctuation).
– Improvement of style and fluency.
– Translation.
– Support in organizing ideas or initial structure.
– Preliminary identification of references (with subsequent verification).
– In all cases, the author is responsible for reviewing, validating, and approving the final result.
3. Prohibited Uses
It is not permitted to use AI tools to:
– Generate entire sections of the manuscript (introduction, discussion, conclusions, etc.).
– Create unverified citations or bibliographic references.
– Produce or alter data, graphs, or images intended for publication.
– Formulate interpretations, hypotheses, or analyses.
– Any misuse will be considered an ethical violation and may result in rejection of the manuscript or editorial sanctions.
4. AI Disclosure Statement
Any author who has used AI must include a transparency statement at the end of the manuscript, for example:
“This manuscript was written by human authors. ‘ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2025)’ was used exclusively for style review and organization of ideas. All interpretations, results, and citations are the result of the authors’ intellectual work.”
This statement will be mandatory as of the policy’s publication date.
In addition, a letter declaring the use of this technology is required, precisely indicating the locations and processes in which it was employed.
5. Table of Uses and Editorial Criteria
| Type of Use | Status | Required disclosure format |
| Stylistic or grammatical correction | ✅ Allowed | “AI was used for linguistic review.” |
| Translation or paraphrasing | ✅ Allowed | “AI was used for translation, with subsequent human review.” |
| Organization of ideas | ✅ Allowed | “AI supported the initial structuring of the text.” |
| Literature search | ⚠️ Acceptable with verification | “AI suggested references that were reviewed and confirmed.” |
| Automated text generation | ❌ Not allowed | — |
| Generation of citations or references | ❌ Not allowed | — |
| Analysis, interpretation, or results | ❌ Not allowed | — |
| Creation of data or graphs | ❌ Not allowed | — |
6. Final considerations
Policies may be updated as the academic use of AI evolves.
