Resumen

En este artículo me centraré en el espacio del cuarto de baño y en la experiencia multisensorial vivida tras sus puertas. A partir de las narrativas de los interlocutores, reflexionaré sobre la construcción de la subjetividad y las identificaciones cotidianas. La etnografía se basó en métodos cualitativos. Se realizaron entrevistas abiertas a hombres y mujeres entre quince y cincuenta y dos años, habitantes de la provincia de Segovia, España. Con el debido consentimiento informado, se abordaron cuatro bloques de reflexión: descriptivo, intimidad/privacidad, sensorialidad y limpieza/suciedad. Pensaré el cuarto de baño, por un lado, como un espacio que posibilita y contiene —en el sentido de tener dentro de sí y de retener— «anomalías», en el sentido de M. Douglas (1973), de elementos que están fuera de lugar. Por otro lado, como un «trasfondo escénico» (Goffman 1970) donde el «enredo» (Löfgren 2016) entre objetos, discursos, sentidos y emociones permite desplegar procesos íntimos y creativos de construcción multisensorial del yo. La articulación de estas ideas permitirá la exploración del cuarto de baño como un espacio multisensorial que facilita la manifestación de la capacidad de agencia de las personas para (re)crear su subjetividad, revelando la naturaleza sutil, fluida y tensa de nuestras identificaciones cotidianas.

Abstract

In this article, I will focus on the bathroom space and the multisensory experience behind its doors. Based on the interviewees’ narratives, I will reflect on the construction of subjectivity and everyday identifications. The ethnography used qualitative methods. Open interviews were conducted with men and women aged 15 to 52, residents of the province of Segovia, Spain. With informed consent, four areas of reflection were addressed: descriptive, intimacy/privacy, sensoriality, and cleanliness/dirtiness. I will consider the bathroom, on the one hand, as a space that enables and contains (in the sense of holding within itself and retaining) “anomalies,” in the sense of M. Douglas (1973) as elements that are out of place. On the other hand, as a “scenic background” (Goffman 1970) where the “entanglement” (Löfgren 2016) between objects, discourses, senses, and emotions enables intimate and creative processes of multisensory construction of the self to be unfolded. The articulation of these ideas will allow for the exploration of the bathroom as a multisensory space that facilitates the manifestation of people’s capacity for agency to (re)create their subjectivity, revealing the subtle, fluid, and tense nature of our everyday identifications.
