Resumen

Este artículo explora las polémicas del concepto “espacio social”. Se distinguen cuatro ejes principales de pensamiento: el espacio social como el entorno material de los grupos sociales; el espacio social como establecimiento relacional de posiciones; el espacio social como enfoque dialéctico de la relación sociedad-espacio y, finalmente, los hilos del constructivismo que cuestionan la oposición de la sociedad y el espacio desde una perspectiva posestructural. Este ensayo intenta ubicar estas cuatro perspectivas dentro de la literatura que presta atención a la teoría social, la geografía social, los estudios urbanos y sus implicaciones para las profesiones espaciales de planificación urbana, diseño urbano, arquitectura e ingeniería civil. Estas cuatro perspectivas del espacio social son complementarias desde el punto de vista teórico. Su aplicación en la investigación social a menudo ocurre simultáneamente dentro y entre diferentes disciplinas, dependiendo, en gran medida, del objeto de análisis y de cómo se define la geografía. Sostengo que estas cuatro perspectivas teóricas definen la geografía distintamente, la primera como espacio funcional, la segunda como lugares centrales, la tercera como territorialidad y la última como lugares vividos. Además, estas perspectivas y su definición de la geografía influyen en la práctica y en la política profesional que afecta la forma urbana. Este trabajo presta atención al vínculo entre el conocimiento y la práctica que ha creado entornos socioespaciales contemporáneos.

Abstract

This essay explores the polemics of the concept “social spatial.” Four main axes of thought can be distinguished: social space as the material environment of social groups; social space as a relational establishment of positions; social space as a dialectical approach to the society-space relationship; and, finally, the threads of constructivism that question the opposition of society and space from a post-structural perspective. This essay attempts to situate these four perspectives within the literature that pays attention to social theory, social geography, urban studies and their implications for the spatial professions of urban planning, urban design, architecture and civil engineering. These four perspectives of social space are complementary from a theoretical point of view. Its application in social research often occurs simultaneously within and among different disciplines, depending largely on the object of analysis, and how geography is defined. I argue that these four theoretical perspectives define geography differently as either functional space, central places, territoriality, or lived places. Moreover, these perspectives and their respective definitions of geography influence practice and professional policy that affect urban form. This essay pays attention to the link between knowledge and practice that have created contemporary socio-spatial environments.
